Historical Facts:

As for visiting Old Cairo, it is considered one of the most important visits for any foreign tourist who wants to visit Egypt in general, as Old Cairo has deep roots that extend to the Fatimid state, which established the city of Cairo in order to be a new headquarters for their caliphate, which they tried to transfer from the city of Mahdia in Tunisia to Egypt. There was an urgent need to invade Egypt to be a new center for the Fatimid Caliphate and a regional center for spreading Shiite thought. Hence, the Fatimid invasion of Egypt in 970 AD. Two years later, in about 972 AD, Jawhar al-Siqilli began to build Cairo with its high and elevated walls, which had four main gates in the four different directions. A palace was also built for the Fatimid Caliph al-Mu’izz li-Din Allah al-Fatimi, as well as the most important and first Fatimid mosque to spread Shiite doctrine in Egypt, which is Al-Azhar Mosque. In the middle of that city, Cairo, there was the main street that connects Bab Zuweila and Bab al-Futuh. This street was later rushed to by all the sultans, caliphs, and even princes to build any building there. To immortalize his name and as evidence of his assumption of power as Sultan of Egypt, which has produced a street very rich in ancient monuments, and has now been transformed into something resembling an open museum.

As for the Citadel of Saladin, Saladin began building this citadel on top of the Mokattam Mountain in 572 AH / 1176 AD in a place known as Qubbat al-Hawa, but he did not complete it during his lifetime. It was completed by Sultan Al-Kamil bin Al-Adil (604 AH / 1207 AD), who was the first to inhabit it and made it a royal residence. It remained the seat of government in Egypt until the reign of Khedive Ismail, who moved the seat of government to Abdeen Palace in the Khedivial Cairo area. The citadel witnessed many historical events from the Ayyubid era until the end of the Muhammad Ali dynasty, which ruled Egypt from the beginning of the nineteenth century until the July 1952 Revolution. Many facilities were added to the citadel over the ages, the most important of which are: Muhammad Ali Mosque, Al-Nasir Muhammad bin Qalawun Mosque, Suleiman Pasha Al-Khadem Mosque, in addition to a number of museums, including: Al-Jawhara Palace Museum, Police Museum, and Al-Harbi Museum.

Sultan Al-Nasir Hassan Mosque and School or Sultan Hassan School or Sultan Hassan Mosque is one of the famous historical mosques in Cairo. It is described as the pearl of Islamic architecture in the East, and is the most harmonious and consistent monument in Islamic Cairo, and represents the stage of maturity of Mamluk architecture. It was built by Sultan Al-Nasir Hassan bin Al-Nasir Muhammad bin Qalawun during the period from 757 AH / 1356 AD to 764 AH / 1363 AD during the era of the Bahri Mamluks’ rule in Egypt.
